Applied Optics Division, Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology

The research in the Applied Optics Division lead by Dr Anoop K K mainly focuses on Laser- induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Laser Surface Texturing (LST), and Laser Produced Plasma (LPP) characterisation. In collaboration with Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, his group investigates the Industrial application of LIBS. Furthermore, the collaboration with the Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS), a prime wing of ISRO, the group explores the space applications of LIBS. LST is a promising technology for fabricating functional surfaces with specific properties like hydrophobic, antibacterial, adhesive, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, light-absorbing, low friction, etc. Fabrication of ‘Black Silicon’ via direct laser processing is an ongoing activity of the group. Moreover, to get a more in-depth insight into the fundamental mechanisms of intense light-matter interactions, they study the spatial and temporal evolution of LPP using optical emission spectroscopy (OES), Intensified Charge-Coupled Devices (ICCD), Langmuir Probe, and Faraday Cup.
